Restoring a smile after a cycling accident
What she wanted: her own smile back, not a new one. The fractures ran deep enough that bonding or veneers wouldn’t have held, so porcelain crowns were the right choice for strength. We matched the shade and translucency to her untouched neighboring teeth and refined the edges so the crowns disappear in photos and up close. Treatment ran about six weeks from the emergency visit to final crowns, with well-fitting temporaries in between. A single-tooth crown case like this typically starts around $1,800 per tooth.
What she wanted: a restoration that looked like it belonged and didn’t need to be redone again. We started with a 3D CT scan to check the implant itself, confirmed it was sound, and designed a new custom abutment and porcelain crown to correct the angle, gum contour, and color the first attempt had missed. Two visits over about four weeks. Replacing a failed implant crown typically runs $2,500 to $4,000 depending on whether the abutment is replaced.
What he wanted: to stop thinking about it. A single implant was placed by our board-certified periodontist, allowed to heal for about four months, and then restored by a prosthodontist with a custom abutment and a layered porcelain crown. The ceramist copied the surface texture and faint translucency of the neighboring tooth, which is why you can’t pick it out. Total time was about five months. A single implant with crown typically ranges from $4,500 to $6,500.
What she wanted: the length and brightness her teeth had before decades of grinding wore them down. The plan started with an evaluation of her bite, because veneers on a grinding bite are veneers that chip. Whitening set the base shade, then porcelain veneers were designed in a wax-up she previewed as temporaries before the final set was made. She now wears a nightguard to protect the result. About seven weeks from consultation to final bonding. A veneer makeover of this scope typically falls between $12,000 and $25,000.
